Glossary

barcode

The number that identifies a particular library account, book, or other library material.

bibliography

A list of related titles.

browser

Software that lets you view and navigate documents on the Internet.

call number

A number that identifies a book or other material and shows where it is on the shelf in relation to other books or materials.

click

To press and release the pointer button.

cursor

A movable symbol that shows a position on the screen. The cursor moves as you move the pointer. See also pointer.

default

A value used by computer software unless you specify a different value.

double-click

To press and release a pointer button twice, quickly.

drag

To press and hold down a pointer button while moving the pointer. This technique is used to select text and move windows and icons on the desktop.

hold

A request to the library to reserve an item when it becomes available.

icon

A picture that stands for a feature, function, command, operation, program, or file.

link

Text or picture on a Web page that you can click to go to another location.

menu

A list of choices you can select.

menu option

A text or picture choice on a menu.

pointer

A device used to move the cursor on the computer monitor. A pointer may be a mouse, trackball, touch screen, light pen, tablet, joy stick, or keypad.

scroll bar

A standard control along the right side or bottom of a list box or window. Drag the scroll bar to see more information.

type

To press keys on the keyboard.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. A series of characters identifying a file or document's location on the Internet or World Wide Web, also called the Internet address.
