The Laurel County Public Library is an award winning system, beneficial to the community and region.
The main library, constructed in 2003, won the “Build Kentucky” award in 2004. It is a 25,100 square feet and houses a community room, children’s area, reference area, Kentucky room and 38 computers for public use. A reading garden, donated to the library by Aisin and Toyota, is adjacent to the building complete with a teahouse and Japanese plantings. The Veteran’s bricks are also located here. Veterans from each American war are memorialized in the garden.
More than 35,000 borrowers are registered with the library. The library circulates 500,000 items annually and sees roughly 20,000 people each month. A collection of almost 170,000 books, tapes, CDs and DVDs is housed in three locations and on the bookmobile.
Programs for children and adults are scheduled on a regular basis. Quilt shows, art exhibits, magician shows, dance lessons, yoga instruction, book discussions and author readings are just a few of the programs that have been hosted by the library.
Children enjoy a wide range of opportunities at all three locations. Our youngest library users are encouraged to read and develop a love of learning early as shown in our “Books for Babies” program. Pre-school children, elementary age children and teenagers will also find materials and programs to encourage them.
Computer classes are offered through the Reference Department on a regular basis. Reference librarians are available to help with school projects and research questions. The Laurel County Public Library is also part of a state consortium, and offers virtual reference services to library patrons.
Branches located in East Bernstadt and Corbin are of great value to the communities they serve. Bookmobile services are available for those experiencing immobile circumstances. If you are interested, call for an application.
The library is governed by a board of five active community members concerned with the advancement of learning and education in Laurel County. The board members meet monthly to establish policy and guidelines. They are appointed by the County Judge. They are responsible for employing a district director to oversee the operations of the library and provide leadership to the organization.
