Helping our Patrons Respond to the 2020 Census

Libraries across the state are helping their patrons by assisting them with the Census, and we’d like to help too! Simply call the library at (606) 864-5759 and a staff member can take your information over the phone. Don’t have your 12-digit Census ID? No problem! We can use your mailing address and go from there.

It only takes a few minutes and no sensitive information is shared during the phone call.

Why is it so important?

The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. It’s conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency.

Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data. This data informs decisions about allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding to communities across the country, something that counties in southeastern Kentucky desperately need.

This data is very valuable to businesses, as the results will provide a rich set of data on the communities they could serve, including population trends and growth projections. Business owners rely on census results to make decisions, such as where to open new stores, restaurants, factories, or offices, where to expand operations, where to recruit employees, and which products and services to offer.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts. That means that communities can be more fairly represented.

Our founding fathers knew how important it was that it’s in the Constitution: Article 1, Section 2, mandates that the country conduct a count of its population once every 10 years. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.

Let’s work together!

As of April the 18th, only 51.4% of Laurel Countians have responded to the census but we can do better! It’s too important to not accurately represent our population.

We can do it for you!

Give us a call Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm and one of our staff members will fill out your census entry for you. It only takes a few minutes and you’re finished.

If you prefer, you can also respond to the census and fill out the form yourself. Which ever method you choose isn’t important, it’s that you make sure that you’re counted.
