True Crime Cases: June 2019

This intriguing group will meet once a month to look at what many people are fascinated by, True Crime Cases. Each month we’ll discuss cases that have gripped a nation and try to explain the criminal psychology by using descriptions of police investigations and trial procedures.

Discussion for this case will be on Tuesday, June 25th at 5pm.

The West Memphis Three

This month we’ll be discussing the West Memphis Three. The group was comprised of a trio of men, who while teenagers, were convicted of the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Suggested readings: Devil’s Knot by Mara Leveritt and Life After Death by Damien Echols

Suggested documentary: Paradise Lost

This triple-murder case captured the nation’s attention after the release of the HBO documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills in June 1996. In August 2011, the three teenagers who had been convicted of the grisly killings, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr., were released from prison after being incarcerated in Arkansas for 18 long years. Echols had received a death sentence, and Baldwin and Misskelley were each given life sentences despite an arguably botched police investigation and questionable evidence.
